Attribute Accuracy Report Attribution of the data set was checked for data entry errors through a series of reviews that checked for inconsistencies with interpretation results. The coverage has been checked for errors and attribution is complete.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report The data were compiled on a 1:24,000 scale base with a horizontal accuracy +/- 40 feet or 12 meters. Point locations determined either by plotting position on a USGS topographic map based on odometer measurements and landmarks, or, for more recent data, with GPS.
Source Scale Denominator 24000
Type of Source Media hardcopyDiazo
Beginning Date 1/1/1948
Ending Date unknown
Source Currentness Reference U.S. Geological Survey
Source Citation Abbreviation (24k) USGS 1:24,000 scale quadrangles
Source Contribution USGS 1:24,000 7.5' quadrangles used as mapping base
Process Description Added materials points for the following MGS publications: 09-15, Surficial materials in the Chemo Pond quadrangle, Maine (supersedes 01-40). 09-17, Surficial materials in the Kenduskeag quadrangle, Maine (supersedes 01-108).
Process Description Added materials points for the following MGS publications: 09-3, Surficial materials in the Wiscasset quadrangle, Maine (supersedes 99-53). 09-5, Surficial materials in the Damariscotta quadrangle, Maine (supersedes 99-44). 09-10, Surficial materials in the East Pittston quadrangle, Maine (supersedes 99-75). 09-12, Surficial materials in the North Whitefield quadrangle, Maine (supersedes 00-46). 09-19, Surficial materials in the Pushaw Lake quadrangle, Maine (supersedes 01-209).
Process Description When mapping the surficial geology or the extent of sand and gravel aquifers in a quadrangle, a geologist first makes observations about the surficial materials at a network of points throughout the area. These points of observation may be auger holes, road cuts, gravel pits, stream cuts, or other places where sediments are visible. The geologist describes the materials at each location. Sedimentary materials range in particle size from clay (<0.002 mm) to boulders (>256 mm or 10"). The observation points are plotted on the quadrangle and the resulting surficial materials map shows what is known about the distribution, thickness, and texture of sediments in the area. By combining materials data with well and test hole data, seismic studies, other published information, and analysis of aerial photographs, the geologist then interprets the pattern of these materials to create a geologic map. Surficial materials maps are often best used in conjunction with related maps such as surficial geology maps or significant sand and gravel aquifer maps.
