Abstract

This is an image mosaic of true color imagery, 0.50 meter ground sample distance (GSD), high resolution digital orthophotographs produced from aerial photos collected over the coast of Maine in the late summer of 2009. Each pixel represents a planimetric square 0.50 meter on a side on the ground. Aerial photography was flown at approximately 1,900 meters above mean ground level. Source elevation data were 30 meter Digital Elevation Models produced by the USGS from 1:24,000 scale elevation. The digital orthorectified images are referenced to North American Datum 1983, UTM Zone 19, expressed in units of meters. The completed orthorectified GeoTIFF files represent Digital Ortho Quarter Quad (DOQQ) sized sheets. Imagery tiles provide complete coverage of the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) 2009 Eelgrass boundaries as defined by the project.

Purpose

To serve the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR), supplying 0.50 meter ground sample distance, map-accurate, continuous digital photographic coverage for the coast of Maine as identified in the Maine DMR project.

Process Description

Aerial photography for the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) was flown at approximately 1900 meters above mean ground level. Imagery was captured using two cameras (Camera 1 serial number: 142826, focal length 153.541; Camera 2 serial number 144126, focal length 153.328). True color aerial photography flown east-west and north-south, controlled by Airborne Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) was acquired and processed to a positive image over the Maine DMR 2009 Eelgrass project area. The photography was acquired only under conditions that minimized clouds and cloud shadows, smoke, haze, light streaks, snow, flooding, excessive soil moisture, during minimal shadow conditions, and with sun angle between 15 and 30 degrees to minimize sun glint. Imagery was captured during periods of low water turbidity as determined by Maine DMR. The film specified was Kodak 2427 true color original film, processed to a positive image. Adequate stereo coverage over the project area was required with a minimum overlap of 60 percent forward and 30 percent side to provide full stereoscopic coverage appropriate for the production of digital orthos.
