Abstract
GOMLC7 provides land cover data from five interpretations of Landsat data and wetland cover. Photo-interpretations were combined to yield a 31-class raster (grid) digital dataset, "GOMLC7", for the Gulf of Maine watershed. Themes of higher resolution or data quality were overlaid on more generic or older data to produce a product having best available interpretation for each cover class. This is projected as UTM zone 19, NAD83, dimensions in meters, and has a 30m cell size. Purpose
The data is available in the Maine GIS Data Catalog, by county map extent, in colormap embedded GeoTIFF format with a supplemental gomlc.jpg for quickview; and GRID format, with a full schema colormap gomlc7clrmp.txt, and ArcGIS .lyr file gomlc7.lyr. These data are also available in statewide map extent from MEGIS.SDE and from USFWS on CD, see point of contact below.

This information is meant to be used for habitat protection in the Gulf of Maine watershed as identified by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Please note these data do not represent all important habitat for all USFWS trust species. For instance, additional habitat information exists for Maine coastal nesting seabird islands and Atlantic Salmon habitat. Also, please be aware that other information regarding important habitat may exist in your area of interest and you are encouraged to contact the appropriate agencies or organizations for that information, for example Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine Natural Areas Program, The Nature Conservancy. Users must assume responsibility in determining the usability of this data for their purposes. Digital maps retain the accuracy of their source materials. The best use of data mapped at scales of 1:500,000 and 1:250,000 is in statewide planning and studies; at 1:100,000 in regional planning and studies; at 1:62,500 and 1:24,000 in detailed studies and local planning; and at 1:12,000 and 1:5,000 or larger scales in parcel level studies and detailed local planning. In GRID format, the item COUNT may be used with pixel VALUE, DESCRIPTIV and total pixels, to estimate % classification type.
Entity and Attribute Detail Citation
The ArcView shapefile and ArcGIS geodatabase formats, commonly used for Maine GIS data, carry default identifiers and attributes that are software generated and/or important for internal recordkeeping. These are listed here to avoid repetition for every layer, and may not be repeated in the attribute descriptions and definitions of each layer. Land cover sources were reclassed to conform with the CCAP data, spatially adjusted to optimize correspondence with 1:24,000 data, and merged, selecting the superior classes where data overlapped.
