Abstract
EHRTERN Roseate Tern nesting areas identified and mapped as Essential Habitat by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW). The dataset is maintained as a REGIONS coverage and contains attributes for site reference, town, acres, and island identification.
Purpose
PLEASE READ! Essential Wildlife Habitats are areas currently or historically providing physical or biological features essential to the conservation of an endangered or threatened species in Maine and which may require special management considerations. As required under the Maine Endangered Species Act, a state agency or municipal government shall not permit, license, fund or carry out projects that will significantly alter an Essential Habitat or violate protection guidelines adopted for the habitat. Landowners, project planners, municipalities or state agencies considering a project in or near an Essential Habitat should immediately contact an MDIFW Regional Wildlife Biologist for assistance. Essential Wildlife Habitat pertains only to definitions under Maine's endangered species laws (12 MRSA, Chapter 713, Subchapter V, Sections 7754 and 7755-A) and regulations (MDIFW Rules, Chapter 8.05). Information about and mapped locations of other endangered and threatened species habitats, "Significant Wildlife Habitat" (38 MRSA, Chapter 3, Subchapter 1, Section 480-B), rare plants and natural communities, or other important natural resources are not included. For comprehensive information about these resources, please contact the following agencies:Fish and Wildlife Information:Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife284 State StreetState House Station 41Augusta, Maine 04333-0041Phone: (207) 287-8000Rare Plant and Natural Community Information:Maine Natural Areas ProgramMaine Department of Conservation159 Hospital StreetState House Station 93Augusta, Maine 04333-0093Phone: (207) 287-8044

Access Constraints
These data may not be distributed or sold to other users without the written permission of the Commissioner, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Use Constraints
These data are provided by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife solely for individual use or the use of a company or agency for the purpose stated. Boundaries may change as additional survey data become available. The designation of essential habitats is an ongoing process, where sites may be added, deleted and/or revised following public rulemaking. As a result, information and maps will be periodically updated. To be certain the most current essential habitat maps and documents are consulted, users are advised to carefully monitor update notices and version dates. Landowners, project planners, municipalities or state agencies considering a project in or near an Essential Habitat should immediately contact an MDIFW Regional Wildlife Biologist for assistance.

Landowners, project planners, municipalities or state agencies considering a project in or near an Essential Habitat should immediately contact an MDIFW Regional Wildlife Biologist for assistance.
Logical Consistency Report
All boundaries are shown as a solid line and the inside of the line is the edge of the boundary. The boundary line is located approximately 1320 feet from the low tide edge of the nesting island or approximately 1320 feet from the portion of the island used for nesting. The dataset meets "Data Standards for Maine Geographic Information Systems" (June 2002).

Other Citation Details
This citation is for the first official Standard Geographic Code endorsed and adopted by the Governor of Maine, on July 1, 1971. Geocodes have undergone subsequent revisions, all of which were "officially" rolled back to this 1971 list by Maine's Information Services Policy Board (ISPB), as of January 2000. In 1971, all Maine state agencies were requested to implement these five digit geocodes, in agency information systems, to build a base of data for Maine's Minor Civil Divisions (MCDs) and to promote data sharing. Data coded by MCD may subsequently be summarized by any other type of region, administrative district, natural area, etc. The first two digits of the geocode represent the federal code (FIPS) for Maine counties, the remaining three digits uniquely identify each of Maine's MCDs and Reservations. As an information service to state agencies and the public, geocodes for Maine, are now maintained, updated and made available for download, in comma delimited text and .dbf format, through the Maine Office of Geographic Information Systems (MEGIS) Data Catalog

Entity and Attribute Overview
EHRTERN is a REGIONS dataset and contains locations for 22 roseate tern nesting areas. Nesting areas identified and mapped as Essential Habitat must have a record of at least one pair of nesting roseate terns since 1930; have suitable habitat as indicated by the presence of nesting common, arctic, or roseate terns in at least any 3 years since 1976; and be considered essential to the achievement of Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife management goals and objectives for roseate terns. All boundaries are shown as a solid line and the inside of the line is the edge of the boundary. The boundary line is located approximately 1320 feet from the low tide edge of the nesting island or approximately 1320 feet from the portion of the island used for nesting.
Entity and Attribute Detail Citation
The ArcView shapefile and ArcGIS geodatabase formats, commonly used for Maine GIS data, carry default identifiers and attributes that are software generated and/or important for internal recordkeeping. These are listed here to avoid repetition for every layer, and may not be repeated in the attribute descriptions and definitions of each layer. Common software generated identifiers and attributes in Maine GIS data include: FID (feature identifier), Shape (feature geometry), OBJECTID and SHAPE_lengt. In addition, most GIS formats will carry fields for PERIMETER, AREA and/or LENGTH according to feature geometry. These fields are typically available by default, with the units based on coordinate system or projection units of GIS data. Most GIS software packages also provide a means to calculate these values. It is important to test any columns containing PERIMETER, AREA or LENGTH values before using them for analysis purposes. These important values can be carried from format to format and become out-dated. Verify that the values are correct. Also, in your GIS software, please view the properties of data layers for the map units used to calculate these fields, and for the units set for display purposes.

Format Information Content
MEGIS has made all vector layers, in the Maine GIS Internet Data Catalog, available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format. A shapefile is a simple non-topological format that stores the geometry and attribute information for a set of geographic features as a set of vector (point, line, polygon) coordinates. Shapefiles draw quickly and directly in ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcExplorer. Shapefiles are a compatible data type for many other types of GIS software. Three files are fundamental to each shapefile: .shp stores the feature geometry (shape and location information); .shx stores the index of the feature geometry; .dbf a dBASE (TM) file stores the attribute information for the features. Other index files may be created to help speed analysis and query: these file formats are .sbn .sbx .ain .aix .fbn and .fbx. In addition you may find projection .prj, and metadata .xml, files associated with shapefiles.
