Abstract

ARCHIVE_BACTI is a polygon dataset that contains historical shellfish harvest area bacterial pollution closure information for the coast of Maine . Polygons are based on legal boundary descriptions and describe polygons that were in effect from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2011. POLYGON codes include: D_Approved, D_Repealed, Status, NSSP, Cond_Type, Cond_Detail, and ACRES. A COMMENT field provides additional information on a polygon's boundary description, harvest information or the time that it went into effect.

Purpose

Historical data regarding shellfish harvest area pollution classifications can be helpful tools for planning activities. Data at this scale is suitable for use in generalized studies and local planning.

Process Description

Digitization of data- Michelle Mason Webber and Paudraig Curran created polygons according to the legal description of each polygon's boundaries described in legal notices. Each person used their own batch of legal notices (spanning several years worth of notices) to create polygons in their own GIS layer. Problems with legal text descriptions were noted in the Comment field, as was documentation regarding legal notice polygons moving from one legal notice to another. When two versions of a legal notice were signed on the same day, the time of signature was placed into the Comments field. The Comments field was also used to house additional information on a Conditional area's status, if all of the information couldn't fit into the Cond_Detail field.

Process Description

Data review- Michelle Mason Webber reviewed polygon boundaries and codes, and merged separate GIS files into one archive file. She sent the GIS files to Growing Area personnel for review. Seth Barker from MEDMR assisted with polygon coding and review, and clipping the polygons to the coastline using the "24K coast poly" layer file. Michelle will be responsible for future updates after this file is initially posted to the Maine Office of GIS website.

MEGIS has made all vector layers, in the Maine GIS Internet Data Catalog, available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format. A shapefile is a simple non-topological format that stores the geometry and attribute information for a set of geographic features as a set of vector (point, line, polygon) coordinates. Shapefiles draw quickly and directly in ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcExplorer. Shapefiles are a compatible data type for many other types of GIS software. Three files are fundamental to each shapefile: .shp stores the feature geometry (shape and location information); .shx stores the index of the feature geometry; .dbf a dBASE (TM) file stores the attribute information for the features. Other index files may be created to help speed analysis and query: these file formats are .sbn .sbx .ain .aix .fbn and .fbx. In addition you may find projection .prj, and metadata .xml, files associated with shapefiles.
