Abstract

This dataset depicts 250-foot habitat zones surrounding the perimeters of Significant Vernal Pools (SVPs) or Potentially Significant Vernal Pools (PSVPs). SVPs and PSVPs were mapped and surveyed in the field by Maine Department of Environmental Protection staff, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologists, and appropriately trained consultants.

Purpose

This dataset was developed in accordance with Maine's Natural Resources Protection Act (NRPA). Under this Act, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) is designated as the authority for determining Significant Wildlife Habitats (SWHs). This dataset includes all Significant Vernal Pools currently mapped.

Distribution of this data to other users by anyone other than Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW), Maine Deptartment of Environmental Protection, or Maine Office of Geographic Information Systems is NOT authorized. Use of this data for identifying Significant Vernal Pools under Maine's Natural Resources Protection Act is the only use that is endorsed by MDIFW; other uses may or may not be valid.

Attribute Accuracy Report

Vernal pool outlines are derived from field mapping based on two of the following: USGS Topographic Maps (1:24,000 scale), large-scale aerial photographs, and GPS coordinates. Pool locations are verified by both the field mapper and by Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) GIS staff and vernal pool biologists. Attribute data for each vernal pool are reviewed by the field surveyor, the MDIFW vernal pool biologist, and MDIFW GIS Staff.

Logical Consistency Report

Each polygon in this data set represents a single vernal pool with its associated attributes. The "PoolID" field relates the mapped pool to more extensive attributes maintained in a Microsoft Access database. Integrity of the PoolID connection between the spatial and attribute databases is assessed by visual confirmation when each record is created. A hard copy of the field data form used to map and designate each vernal pool is archived at Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Completeness Report

This data set contains all vernal pools currently designed as "significant" or "potentially significant" under Maine's Natural Resources Protection Act. New pools are being mapped and submitted to Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for designation on a continuously; this data set is updated as needed based on when new data is obtained.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report

Vernal pool locations are mapped from a combination of field mapping based on USGS Topographic Maps, high resolution aerial imagery, and GPS coordinates. The horizontal accuracy is dependant upon which of those data sources were used but should be <10 meters.
